In ancient Indian mythology, the river and its goddess. Some believe that Saraswati is the sacred name of the Indus.

In the *Rigveda*, Saraswati is the most revered river. She is mentioned alongside Sarayu and Sindhu as a great river, as well as together with the Ganges, the Yamuna, the Shutudri, the Parusni, and others. Sindhu is called the mother of Saraswati. The Rigveda tells of kings and people living along the banks of the Saraswati. She is bountiful, full-flowing, and swift; she flows from the mountains to the sea, and her flow surpasses all other waters in grandeur; her water is pure, and with her waves Saraswati shatters mountain peaks. She has seven branches and seven sisters; she is the mother of streams, the best of mothers, rivers, and goddesses. Sarasvati fills the air and all other spaces. She is asked to descend from the sky, from the great mountain, and take part in the sacrifice; she is called Asuric and divine (referring to her celestial origin).

Saraswati is the purifier; she heals, brings gifts, food, offspring, life force, and immortality; her breasts and her milk are mentioned; she creates physical offspring, and she is also the slayer of enemies. Saraswati has a golden chariot; she is rich in horses; she protects singers and is associated with poetry; she is the goddess of sacred speech. Saraswati often appears under other names—Brahmi, Bharati, Sharada, Vagishvari, and Putkari.

Saraswati is depicted as a beautiful woman dressed in white. She usually sits on a lotus pedestal (padma-asana) in a graceful pose (lalita-asana): one leg dangles downward, while the other is tucked beneath her. She is associated with the color white, which symbolizes the purity of knowledge. She wears no jewelry or gold and is dressed simply—a sign that she values spiritual values over material ones. She is usually depicted with four arms.

Saraswati—the Devi—presides over education, intellect, and speech. Those who invoke her will achieve great success in their studies and will never forget what they have read. There is a subtle energy channel of Saraswati that extends from the Ajna chakra to the tip of the tongue and connects the mind with speech, awakening inspiration in poets, seers, and many others.

The goddess Saraswati manifests her energy through all flowers that have a very strong and pleasant fragrance. For example, the flowers of lilac, jasmine, bird cherry, magnolia, and apple trees. Among minerals, amethyst, heliotrope, olivine, mother-of-pearl, charoite, chrysolite, and white jade are associated with Saraswati’s energy. Among metals, it is silver.

In a person, Saraswati, together with Varuna (Neptune), governs creative intelligence, the Vishuddha chakra, the kidneys, and water-salt metabolism. She controls the function of the endocrine cells of the pancreas.

If Saraswati bestows her grace upon someone or becomes their guardian angel, that person acquires extraordinary charm, splendor, a sense of taste in everything—for example, in clothing—calmness, an excellent memory, a highly developed intellect, and eloquent speech.

Saraswati cannot tolerate disorder and filth, deception, hypocrisy and duplicity, betrayal, marital infidelity, lies and abusive language, a tendency toward idle chatter, indiscriminate consumption of information, plagiarism, any distortion of knowledge—especially spiritual knowledge—rudeness and aggression in behavior, a lack of refinement, a tendency toward frivolity, and hasty decision-making.
